2 1/2 tsp active dry yeast
3/4 cup hot water
1 tbsp sugar
2 cups all purpose white flour
1/2 tsp table salt
1 tbsp coarse salt
1 egg beaten
Preheat oven to 425 degrees.
Fill a cake pan half way with water and put on the bottom rack of the oven (this is to keep the pretzels moist as they bake).
Mix yeast and hot water (135 degrees F) in a large mixing bowl until yeast is dissolved.
Add sugar and table salt and mix well.
Add flour, 1/2 cup at a time, and stir with a wooden spoon until all flour has been added and well blended.
Lightly flour the surface of a counter top and your hands, dig into the dough, and kneed roughly 30 times.
When complete, roll the dough out and form into pretzel shapes, or any
other fun shape.
Place the dough onto a greased cookie sheet or baking stone (my favorite is
Pampered Chef baking stone.)
Brush dough with the beaten egg and sprinkle coarse salt on top. Bake for 12 to 15 minutes, or until golden brown.
*Alternatives to salt are: Cinnamon and sugar, garlic powder, sun dried tomato bits... get creative!
